Alright so here are the books I grabbed this week, and my thoughts on them.
All-New X-Men #22
This book gets a lot of the flack that Bendis books get, but honestly this is in my opinion the best book in the X-Men line right now. Bendis is just knocking it out of the park, issue after issue. Stuart Immomen's art is gorgeous as usual.
All New X-Factor #2
Peter David's been writing X-Factor for years. His run is critically acclaimed, and I haven't touched a single issue of it. Two issues into this new series, I like what I'm seeing, and I'm definitely interested in seeing his work on the previous X-Factor series.
Animal Man #27
With only two issues left, this is a book I'm really going to miss. Jeff Lemire's Animal Man has been one of the highlights of the New 52. This issue sees Buddy Baker take on Brother Blood with his new found Bridgewalker abilities. What ensues is a fun read from cover to cover.
Avengers #25
And we have our first dud of the week. The Avengers (in original attire) of another universe come over to the 616, and they are evil. Great, Forever Evil has come over to Marvel.....At least the art is good...
Avengers World #2
So this book and the previous feature largely the same team, and are written by the same writer. Why then is this issue so much better than Avengers #25? Perhaps because it was more focused on new Avenger, Smasher. I'm curious to see what AIM has planned for her in the coming issues.
Batman #27
Scott Snyder is my favorite modern writer and Greg Capullo's work on this book has consistently been top notch. That being said, I wish Zero Year was over. We've all seen Batman's origin a million times; I don't want to see it again. It beats this book being a Forever Evil tie in, but Forever Evil sets a very low bar. This issue is more or less the highlight of this arc so far, especially the parts focused on Jim Gordon. I still wish it was over though. BUT JESUS FUCKING CHRIST CAPULLO, DAT COVER.
Captain America #15
Much like the series as a whole, I don't know what to make of this issue. This issue wraps up the Loose Nuke arc, and presents some interesting commentary on soldiers simply following orders. But then there's Iron Nail. Who is a communist. A extremely stereotypical, Asian communist. He is lame and belongs in the 60s. Also Dr. Mindbubble.
Justice League #27
So have you readers caught on to how I feel about Forever Evil yet? Despite just being a tie in, this book captures everything that is wrong with the event book. MAJOR DECOMPRESSION. I'm not usually one to complain about decompression, but Cyborg spends the entire issue being rebuilt by his father. That's great. I get it. It could have been five pages tops.
Origins II #2
Okay sure no one wanted to know more about Wolverine's past. And we certainly didn't need to, especially since Marvel will retcon it more times than I'll be able to count over the next decade. All that aside, I'm really enjoying this book so far. Sure Kieron Gillen is writing a pretty middle of the road Wolverine book, but goddamn is Adam Kubert's art pretty.
Wolverine and the X-Men #40
The X-Men line has been in really good place for the last few months. But well before that Jason Aaron was killing it on Wolverine and the X-Men. At least until he hit a slump around AvX. However, the book has come back to its remarkably fun roots in these last few issues. At the Jean Grey School, Quentin and company are driving out the school's most recent invaders. I actually kinda liked Joseph and I'm sad he won't be sticking around. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Wolverine are duking it out with some Sentinels before settling down for some drinks and having a heart to heart. While I'm sure their feud is far from over, it was nice to see these former friends put aside their differences for a moment.
